Ahh, Lucky Coq, how many students would have died of starvation if it weren’t for your $4 pizzas? A lot would be my guess. Lucky Coq is situated on the corner of High and Chapel St in Windsor and they produce unique and delicious pizzas which can be eaten in surrounds that look as though they were sourced entirely from the local Salvo’s.

All of the pizzas at Lucky Coq are priced under $10 but if you get there for lunch Monday-Friday you will only pay $4. No, that’s not a misprint. ANY pizza, $4. The pizzas are fairly minimal when it comes to toppings. You won’t find any Supreme or Meat Lovers here. A lot of the pizzas are inspired by minimal traditional Italian toppings but there are a few unusual ones thrown in there including my favourite the Poncho which is basically nachos on a pizza; corn chips, fresh chunky salsa, jalapenos, cheese and sour cream. Delish. Some of your other options include the Caesar; Caesar salad on a pizza and my brother’s favourite the Agnello; tomato, parmesan, mozzarella, spiced lamb, rocket, pinenuts and sultanas, sounds odd but it is delicious. If you need a bit of extra punch on your pizza you will find sneaky bottles of chilli infused oil on the bar or at the pass. It is seriously good stuff but go easy, it is by no means mild!
El Greco: Haloumi, green olives, lemon.
This place can get a bit hectic on Friday and Saturday night, the bouncers can be absolute snots (Have had them refuse to let friends in who were wearing ties) but it is a great spot for a chilled out lunch. Downstairs is a bit dark but full of comfy couches. Upstairs has a really nice little courtyard which is ideal if the weather is behaving itself. Order and collect cutlery at the bar (you will need cutlery because they don’t slice their pizzas). The service is efficient and unobtrusive.
Drinks are standard pub fair but they have a good range of tap beers including local Victorian labels such as Mountain Goat and they also have an interesting range of infused vodkas.
I also have to put a word in for their sweet pizzas. Lucky Coq is the only place I have had an edible sweet pizza. Most places use their regular pizza base but at Lucky Coq they use this delicious base that is like a cross between a pancake and a waffle and the toppings are chocolately, oozy and scrumptious. YUM!
Lucky Coq are open every day from 12pm.
